My Tenacious Teal Curls Circa 2015
Although I'm not the Halloween-y type, I do get a bit into the season between all things pumpkin and Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights (I low key can/can't wait to go this year, lol).

Another fun thing to do this time of year (or really any time of year) is switch up the color in your curls. I know from firsthand experience that my curls were not built to handle permanent colors, so by and large, I'm stuck with browny-black as my color, with the occasional reddish tint afforded by an overnight henna session.

But whenever I get the itch to switch, I know there's a way that I can (temporarily) satisfy that desire for an outrageous color that I won't regret in a week - by using eyeshadow.

Cream eyeshadow to be exact.

Now, ya girl clearly knows absolutely nothing about makeup beyond a little brow powder, bronzer, and mascara. So I'll never do a GRWM video, because you don't wanna watch me putting on EOS balm and applying mascara all wrong.

But if you want to know how to put eyeshadow in your curls, you're in the right place. The process is actually very simple. I prefer the cream eyeshadow to other temporary colors because unlike Manic Panic, you don't have to lighten your hair for maximum color visibility. And unlike spray-on or hair chalk, the results don't look dry and dusty. Here's how to get results similar what I did with the Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Cream Eyeshadow:

Before Coloring
Before coloring with eyeshadow, your curls need to already be set (and dry) in the style of your choice. If you're a wash and go gal like me, the process works best on day 2 or 3 hair. Again, the process for cream shadow works best on dry hair.

Tools You'll Need
Before you haul off and hit your curls with a dose of color, you'll need the following supplies on hand:

Everybody needs hairspray and cones in their arsenal!
How to Color Your Curls
Now that you've got you or arsenal together here's what you'll need to do:
  • Determine how much of your hair you're going to cover. If you're going for a particular section, clip the rest of the hair that you won't be coloring away. If you're going for an ombré or highlight look, work from back to front, clipping away the sections that aren't being worked on yet.
  • Put on your gloves, and dig your index into the cream eyeshadow pot. Using your index finger and thumb, apply the cream eyeshadow color curl-by-curl or in small sections. Feel free to go over each curl twice for extra vibrancy and saturation.
  • After each section, spritz gently with hairspray to help lock in the color.
  • Repeat steps 1-3 until complete.
  • After all the hair has been colored, do a once-over with the hairspray for setting.
  • If you feel like the color makes your hair look a little dull, while your gloves are still on, gently scrunch one of the above mentioned silicone serums into the areas of the curl that are colored.
Now that your colored curls are popping, there's just a few things you should know. One, this is temporary color using makeup. It's going to rub of against stuff. Avoid wearing white or light colors if you can. Also, try your best to avoid hand in hair syndrome.

Circa 2013 color I did while transitioning. Before, after, and after washing out!
Because this is 24 hour cream eyeshadow, you can totally expect the pigment to be there the next day. In fact, I've run curls under just water, and the color remained with minimal bleeding. To best preserve color and avoid getting color all over the place, sleep in a scarf pineapple or satin bonnet.

Happy temporary coloring! Let me know if you'll be trying this method out in the comments below!

  1. This is totally amazing. Never ever read about such kind of thing. But, when it comes to hair color and beauty products we should be more careful. Unsafe products can do harm to the skin

  2. Aw, this was an extremely good post. This hairstyle is a rather symmetrical hairstyle with clean geometric lines. Women wear it at various lengths. Some accentuate it with bangs and others with color. It sits in a straight line around your face. Even if you have bangs, they will sit straight around your face and cover your ears.
