Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea All Natural Hair Masque Review

Remember when I said I was obsessed with all things Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea? I wasn't lying. From the cowashing rooter to the moisturizing tooter, I'm in love. There's only one product I'm not really too keen on -- the Curl Definng Creme. It's not a bad product, it's just too heavy for my head of hair. But anywho, let's get on with the good stuff.

Ingredient List: Aqua, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Emulsifying Wax NF, Cetrimonium Chloride, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Steareth-20, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Hydrolyzed Silk, Sodium PCA, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Citric Acid, Fragrance (Parfum), Dehydroacetic Acid, Benzyl Alcohol.

Ingredient Breakdown:
  • Water
  • Coconut Oil: Oil high in saturated fats (which is why when cold, it is solid). One of the few known oils to penetrate the hair shaft and truly moisturize hair. Coconut oil helps to moisturize, seal, and prevent breakage.
  • Cetyl Alcohol: Considered "fatty alcohol" -- NOT to be confused with drying alcohols such as ethyl. Acts as a lubricant, thickener, and emollient. Also give conditioner its velvety feel without making hair greasy. Is additionally used to keep product ingredients from separating.
  • Emulsifying Wax NF: A vegetable based emulsifying wax from naturally occurring fats and esters used to create a bond between water and oil for products which require their binding together. Makes a fluid cream, and lotion without the separation, and complements the finished products end texture. NF stands for "National Formulary".
  • Cetrimonium Chloride: Compound close in composition to Behentrimonium Chloride. In addition to having the same penetrating, conditioning, and anti-static properties, centrimonium chloride has been scientifically proven to strengthen the hair when activated by heat.
  • Aloe Vera Leaf Juice: Acts as a natural conditioning agent that restores the hair's sheen, luster, and shine. It not only makes the hair soft, but it also enhances strength and suppleness.
Availability: Right now, I can only find the Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea Hair Masque in packets at Sally Beauty Supply, and online at www.edenbodyworks.com.

Affordability: Here's where things get a little sticky for me. A 1.75oz packet costs $2.49 with the Sally Beauty Club Card (regularly $2.59). One of the things I love about the Eden BodyWorks line is the affordability of all the products. The Jojoba Monoi Deep Conditioner is under $10 for 16oz, like all of their other products that come in jars. But by this calculation, to make a 16oz jar of these packets (technically totaling 15.75oz) I'd have to spend $22.41. For a one-time, test-run purchase, this is not a big deal. But when you actually like the product and want to included it in your rotation,  becomes a little more cumbersome. Overall, the product is not unaffordable, it's just that the packet situation is so far off the mark for their typical price range. As an alternative option, Eden BodyWorks ships the Masques out in boxes of 6 for $15.54 (which is still $2.59 each lol).

Product Claim/Description: Deep conditioner to revitalize and strengthen hair. Penetrates hair shaft to transform dry, brittle hair through an intensely moisturizing botanical blend of Coconut Oil and Shea Butter to deliver softer, stronger hair. This product was made without sulfates and contains no mineral oils (petroleum), dyes, or parabens and is cruelty free.

Performance/Delivery: Love!!!!! Goodness gracious. It's almost like Eden BodyWorks can do no wrong. This Coconut Shea All Natural Hair Masque is like a little slice (or packet, rather) of heaven on earth. It is just as thick and dense as the Jojoba Monoi Deep Conditioner (maybe slightly thicker), and carries that same lovely coconut aroma as the rest of the Coconut Shea Line. The Hair Masque sinks right into the hair and packs a moisturizing punch! Although it is super thick, it goes really easily into the hair and as soon as it makes contact with your strands, you can automatically tell it's going to work wonders.

Freshly cowashed (EBW) and deep conditioned hair!
The moisture factor of this Hair Masque is EPIC! By far, it exceeds everything that a moisturizing and nourishing deep conditioner should be. I don't know about you all, but after I rinse out a deep conditioner, I love to feel that "weight" (not greasiness) that makes me feel like the stuff that was supposed to be absorbed got taken up by my hair, and the things that were supposed to "stick" to my hair, did. This Hair Masque makes my hair feel like that, which is awesome. I can honestly feel the coconut oil at work, because my hair loooooooves coconut oil. It is amazing at eliminating frizz, dryness, dry ends, and making the hair super soft and super strong. It gives great shine, and just is an all around amazing conditioner! I can't get enough -- I have to keep at least 2 or 3 packets in the stash (which can be inconvenient lol) at all times. During my last visit to Sally's, one of the employees broke out a brand new box, and I took 4 of the 6 (I couldn't be rude, I had to leave some for somebody else). It has instantly become one of my top deep conditioners -- yes, I'm putting it up there with Eva NYC Therapy Session Hair Mask and Hydratherma Naturals Amino Plus Protein Deep Conditioning Treatment. It's that effective. It's that AWESOME.

Drawbacks: One drawback as far as the performance of the product itself is concerned is slip. It isn't a super slippy detangling deep conditioner, which isn't a deal breaker. It doesn't make the hair tangle (like a BAD conditioner can), it just doesn't provide the super slip that allows for some deep conditioners to aid in detangling. You can run your head under a little water to thin it out and encourage some slip, but I refuse to let a single drop of this Hair Masque go down the drain before I'm ready. The other drawback is the whole packet situation. My hair is growing (thanks working out, water, and Manetabolism), and having to take a packet (or two) into the shower to effectively coat my hair is a little inconvenient.

Bonuses: As much as the packet is a thorn in my side, I have to admit that it was super clutch a few weeks ago when I was packing to go out of town. I refused to pay for a checked bag, so having a packet of product that fell within TSA regulations and didn't force me to go out and buy more travel containers. The Hair Mask is also curly girl-friendly, meaning there are no silicones -- an honest feat for deep conditioners.

Bottom Line: If you're in the market for a good, penetrating deep conditioner this is the one. This deep conditioner is also great for travel, or for someone looking to test the waters with a new product without having to commit to an entire jar. As soon as I update my Must Haves for 2014, this will be on there!

Overall Product Rating: 4.5 stars. Let's be clear though -- even without the slippiest of the slip, this product still delivers a 5 star performance. The half point is docked for the packet situation. I really, REALLY, love this deep conditioner. I just wish I could get a jar of it!

Best Practices: The Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea All Natural Hair Masque is a phenomenal product. It pairs well with any shampoo or cowash, but it really shines (pun intended) when used following the Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea All Natural Cleansing CoWash.
