Product Review: Nubian Heritage Indian Hemp & Tamanu Grow & Strengthen Edge Taming Taffy

Nubian Heritage Indian Hemp & Tamanu Grow & Stregthen Edge Taming Taffy

I don't know what's up with all these products and their super long names lately. It almost seems like the smaller the container, the bigger the name. Technically, this product is called Nubian Heritage Indian Hemp & Tamanu with Bamboo, Monoi & Garlic Extract Grow & Strengthen Edge Taming Taffy. Talk about a mouthful. But back to the topic at hand.

I picked up goodies from the Nubian Heritage line about a month or so ago, when CVS was doing their buy one, get one half off promotion. This was the ONLY way I'd grab this particular product -- no way I was paying $12 for a 6oz jar of ANYTHING (and word on the street is at Walgreens, the product is $15..shady). Anyways, on to the review.

Ingredient List: Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)(Certified Organic Ingredient), Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil (Certified Organic Ingredient), Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil (Certified Organic Ingredient), Vegetable Glycerin, Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil, Calophyllum Inophyllum (Tamanu) Oil, Olus Oil, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil (Certified Organic Ingredient), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Calenndula Wax, Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B-5), Bambusa Vulgaris (Bamboo) Extract, Tiare (Gardenia Tahitensis) Flower, Essential Oil Blend, Allium Sativum (Garlic) Extract, Melia Azadirochta (Neem) Seed Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E).

Ingredient Analysis (first 6):
  • Organic Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter): Emollient fat from the nut of the East or West African shea nut tree used to moisturize and soften hair.
  • Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil: Oil extracted from the meat of coconuts. It is unique in the sense that it is one of the few oils that can penetrate the hair shaft to provide moisture. It also reduces protein loss when used as a pre-poo treatment.
  • Organic Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil: Moisturizing oil extracted from the meat of olives. It can penetrate the hair's cortex, so it may make hair stronger.
  • Vegetable Glycerin: Vegetable-based humectant, absorbs water from the air to help maintain and retain moisture in hair and prevent dryness and breakage.
  • Cannabis Sativa (Hemp Seed) Oil: Ceramide oil essential to the cohesion of the cuticle and maintenance of its protective effect for the hair shaft. Hemp oil and other ceramides are known to protect and/or repair the hair fibers. In particular, they have a barrier effect which limits the loss of proteins. Also reinforces cuticle cohesion, which gives the hair more strength and liveliness.
  • Calophyllum Inophyllum (Tamanu) Oil: nut-based oil known for reducing inflammation and irritation, as well as helping with hair and skin regeneration. Tends to be an expensive oil, because the Tamanu nut tree only grows on the Polynesian Islands.
Availability: When CVS was running their sale, I had the HARDEST time finding this product. Like, it was sold out EVERYWHERE. I seriously must've gone to about 4 or 5 CVS stores in search of the taffy. Defeated, I settled for rainchecks from two different stores (hey, gotta stack up savings for the future!). But then, at the one store another CVS employee told me would be least likely to have the product (i.e. the hood), it was in stock! So I bought both. Now that the sale is over, I don't see it flying off the shelf as regularly. It's always available at Walgreens, because it's priced so much higher than at other stores. You can also purchase the Edge Taming Taffy online.

Affordability: Regular retail pricing of $11.99 for a 6oz jar is a bit too rich for my blood on the regular. Although I do understand the pricing, when the main ingredients are examined -- they're certified organic, and one of the oils is pretty rare -- paying full price still doesn't jive with me. Counterbalancing the price is the fact that a little bit goes a long way, so a jar of this stuff could possibly last longer than most other products in your stash.

Product Claim/Description:
Heritage: For centuries, herbalists around the globe have applied Hemp to the scalp to calm irritation. In Madagascar, Tamanu Oil is revered for its natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties along with its deeply moisturizing and reparative benefits. In Chinese medicine, Bamboo is incorporated into healing rituals to strengthen hair and promote healthy growth while naturopaths in the Mediterranean apply Garlic Extract. Naturally fragrant Monoi Oil, a beauty secret from Tahiti, intensely hydrates hair preventing breakage.

Purpose: Our all-natural, petrolatum-free Edge Taming Taffy hydrates and repairs damaged, dry and brittle hair with Hemp, Tamanu and Manoi oils. Bamboo, Garlic Extract and Keratin strengthen and fortify the hair. Controls and smoothes edges for a sleek, professional look.

Performance/Delivery: The herbal mystic backstory is cute and all, but I personally don't need such a detailed anecdote. It's encouraging to see the Hemp and Tamanu Oils land in the top 6 ingredients. While I can't say that my edges have made some remarkable and drastic change (my edges were in good shape to begin with), I will say they are more moisturized and softer in general. When bunning or slicking my edges down, the product performs well for a soft hold. Add water into the mix, and you've got a solid slicking. As a styling product, it helped seal in moisture, and provided a soft-to-moderate hold for my satin strip braidout. This product is also great for maintaining moisture on ends of hair that are prone to dryness and splitting. Even greater, the texture is definitely taffy-like without stickiness. I couldn't even tell I was using a product based in shea butter!

Now the real question is will my hair be able to hold up at The Happiest Place on Earth??? Super excited about Disneyland today!!! #naturalhair #transitioner
Satin strip braidout with Edge Taming Taffy
Drawbacks: Beyond pricing, I can't see too much of a drawback with this product. Psychologically speaking, I swear up and down I smell garlic every time I open this product...but then I have to remind myself that my mind is playing tricks on me. There are far too many other oils in this product for me to outright smell garlic...and it's 3rd from the bottom of the ingredient list. In fact, once I get past my whole "I think I smell garlic" thing, I realize the product has a nice perfumey/floral fragrance that isn't too overbearing and doesn't stick around all day.

Bonuses: This stuff is for more than just edges. While I used it with great success for a soft hold while bunning, I was also able to achieve great moisture and definition with the Edge Taming Taffy on my satin strip braidout. It doesn't flake, mixes well with other products, and you really just can't go wrong with a product based in shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil, and glycerin.

Bottom Line: If your edges are in the danger zone, this is probably a product worth investing in. It's a terrific alternative to gel (see BGLH article here), and is based in natural and transitioner friendly ingredients -- a number of which are organic (meaning they've retained most of their nutritive properties). Word to the wise though -- if you plan to purchase, I'd advise stocking up when you come across a sale. Although the ingredients are high quality, I wouldn't encourage my readers to go out and pay full price unless the edge situation is critical.

Best Practices: To diminish the likelihood of taking forever to rub in white taffy, this product works best with water. For edges, lightly spritz water then apply the taffy. For use as a styling product, apply to damp hair following a leave-in of your choice. I'm on that Giovanni 2Chic Avocado & Olive Oil Ultra Moist Leave-In and Styling Elixir right now.

  2. Thank you very much for your review. I've been looking for something for my edges. My only concern is the aloe in it which tend to eventually dry out the hair.

  5. What is CBD products? Well cannabidiol is a popular natural remedy used for many common ailments. Better known as CBD, it is one of more than 100 chemical compounds called cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant. Tetrahydrocannabinol is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis, which means it causes the sensation of getting high that’s often associated with cannabis. However, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive.

  8. Is hemp actually beneficial for hair? That's interesting. I started growing cannabis myself after I discovered that sativa seeds weren't expensive at all, so I think next time I collect the harvest, I'll extract some oil and add it to my shampoo. I think the smell won't be the best, but hopefully, it'll be worth it because I know that cannabis has many health benefits.
