Product Review: Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Lavender Mint Moisturizing Conditioner

On the blog! Yesterday, I got the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Lavender Mint Conditioner liter from Ulta. Was it worth it? Check out my review on www.maneobjective.com! #naturalhair #naturalhairproducts #productreview #conditioner #blogger #PaulMitchell

Yesterday, I went on a product junkie raid. I hit my usual spots to browse for product goodies - Sally's, Ulta, Sprouts, and Target. Only place I didn't get to hit was Vitamin Shoppe...darn lol. Ulta was having a great sale on liters of product, and how could I say no to a liter of conditioner for $20 or less? I grabbed up the Lavender Mint and The Conditioner photo'd above, and combined them with my $5-off and $3-off coupons. I was excited to try the Lavender Mint because it felt so creamy, and I decided to try giving The Conditioner another fair shake because I couldn't remember what happened last time I bought it. Now on with my review of the Lavender Mint.

Ingredient List: Water, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Quaternium-52, Stearyl Alcohol, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Bis(C13-15 Alkoxy) PG-Amodimethicone, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Fragrance, Benzyl Alcohol, Limonene, Linalool, Glycerin, Panthenol, PPG-2 Myristyl Ether Propionate, Pentaerythrityl Tetracaprylate/Tetracaprate, Lavender Oil, Peppermint Oil, Tea Tree Leaf Oil, Acetamidopropyl Trimonium Chloride, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Isobutyl-paraben, Tetrasodium EDTA, Trimethylsiloxy-amodimethicone, C11-15 Pareth-7, C12-16 Pareth-(, Trideceth-12

Ingredient Analysis:
  • Behentrimonium Methosulfate: Mild detangling ingredient made from the rapeseed (canola). Known for great detangling without leaving product buildup on hair.
  • Cetearyl, Cetyl, & Stearyl Alcohol: Fatty alcohols and emollient conditioners known for giving products a creamy, thick texture and feel.
  • Behentrimonium Chloride: Quaternary ammonium compound and close cousin of cetrimonium chloride. Also penetrates the hair, conditions, and acts as an anti-static and anti-microbial agent.
  • Glyceryl Stearate SE: Lipid (oil) surfactant used as a surfactant and emulsifying agent.
  • Quarternium-52: Quaternary ammonium salt that functions as a hair conditioner, anti-static agent, surfactant, and cleansing agent.
Availability: Pretty widely available. I purchased mine at Ulta, but it can be found pretty much anywhere Paul Mitchell and salon-style products are sold.

Affordability: I paid the equivalent of $17 for a 33.8oz (1 liter) bottle. The sale price at Ulta is $19.99, which for the amount is not bad at all. My issue with the product is the regular price. Regularly, it is about $30. A little pricey for a conditioner that is based in pretty much the same ingredients as many of my 5 under $5 conditioners. At this point, you're just paying for the name.

Product Claim/Description: Put hair and mind at ease with the comforting fragrance of lavender, mint, and tea tree oil. Ideal for dry, coarse and unruly hair, this rich conditioner soothes snarls and quenches moisture starved locks while helping to improve manageability and thwart split ends.

Performance/Delivery: My plan was to use the conditioner to cowash, rinse out, and then condition with it. Unfortunately, I didn't get past the cowash. It felt creamy enough, and although I wasn't wild about the lavender scent (it is definitely present, but not overbearing) with the slight hint of mint, I figured it would work well for me. The ingredients looked standard enough, so I figured I was in good hands. Well, I was wrong. I wasn't in good hands, I wasn't in bad hands. I was in marginally decent hands. I found myself disappointed with this conditioner as a cowash, detangler, and conditioner. With enough water, it was a halfway decent detangler (although I've certainly encountered cheaper products that are infinitely more effective), as it had a moderate amount of slip. It did a pretty good job as a cowash, and my hair felt clean afterwards. Unfortunately, as a conditioner it fell flat. It wasn't really moisturizing, my hair definitely didn't feel frizzy (although it never does while wet), but I got nowhere near that buttery smooth conditioned feeling I look for from a good conditioner. Overall, it was just okay. I definitely think the price point for this conditioner is not justified. I wasn't impressed enough to leave it in my product stash so of course, I returned it to Ulta for a full refund. In fact, the person at Ulta that handled my refund told me that the conditioner wasn't that great at moisturizing. Thanks for keeping it real, lady.

Drawbacks: Price point aside, I am disappointed that there are no oils whatsoever in the top 10 products. Furthermore, the ingredients for which the conditioner is named (lavender, mint and tea tree) are 23rd, 24th, and 25th, respectively. Another drawback (which I'm sure was just a chance flaw and by no means indicative of the entire line) was that my pump wouldn't open. Luckily, Ulta was giving away free salon pumps for all their liter products, so that problem was easily rectified.

Bonuses: I'm reaching for one...I really am. I mean, it was a decent cowashing product. If you're interested in something Wen-esque, but don't want the price tag, this is an option to try out. The conditioner comes in smaller bottles too, so you don't have to be stuck with an entire liter.

Bottom Line: I just was not impressed. I'm sure the dead giveaway was the fact that I returned the product. I had higher hopes for this conditioner, but unfortunately it did not deliver. It was just okay at best. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to look for it, but if you're in a desperate crunch it'll do. There are some great Paul Mitchell products out there. This is not one of them.

Best Practices: If you do decide to pick this one up, use tons of water. The only way to work this through natural hair is while soaking wet.

Overall Product Rating: 2 stars
